Tips To Take Care Of Your Tuxedo Suit
A tuxedo suit is usually worn during formal events, so keeping it in good shape ensures it looks fresh every time. Proper care allows the suit to maintain its shape, texture, and color. This also means it’s always ready when necessary, without last-minute stress or preparation.
Store it the right way:
A tuxedo suit should be hung on a wide, padded hanger. This keeps the shoulders in shape and prevents wrinkles. It’s best to store it in a garment bag to protect it from dust and exposure to sunlight. Avoid folding the suit for long periods, as this may leave creases that are hard to remove.
Clean only when necessary:
Tuxedos don’t want frequent cleaning unless there are visible marks or stains. Too much dry cleaning may affect the fabric. It’s better to brush the suit lightly after each wear to remove surface dust. Spot cleaning with a damp cloth is useful for minor stains, especially on the lapels or cuffs.
Air it out after use:
After wearing, hang the tuxedo in a well-ventilated room. This allows any moisture or odour to escape naturally. It’s best not to store the suit immediately after use without airing it, as this might lead to fabric odour or mildew over time.
Press lightly instead of ironing:
Direct ironing may damage the tuxedo fabric, especially the satin parts. Instead, use a steamer to remove wrinkles. A light press with a cloth placed between the iron and the fabric can be done if steaming isn’t possible. Always test on a hidden part first to avoid damage.
Care for the accessories too:
The tuxedo usually comes with accessories like a bow tie, cummerbund, or pocket square. These should also be stored properly. Keep the bow tie and cummerbund flat or rolled, and wash them according to the fabric instructions. Clean shoes and keep them in dust bags to maintain their shine.
Check for any loose threads or buttons:
Before storing the tuxedo, inspect it for any loose threads, missing buttons, or other small issues. Fixing these early prevents larger repairs later. Keeping everything in place ensures the tuxedo looks neat every time it’s worn.
